The partitioning of India took place in 1947 when in haste following the events of WW2 the British decided to leave India for good. Britain was left bankrupt after the war , so how were they going to feed a country that was 10 times the size of their own! The events that lead to the partitioning were highly controversial and hurried through resulting in a mass exodus of people and the killing of millions. a man who had never been east of Paris Cyril Radcliffe was asked to draw a line on the map of India dissecting the Muslim majority from the Hindu population resulting in the creation the new state of Pakistan . he did this unthinkable job in a matter of few weeks and his final work was kept secret until independence day Aug 15 1947 the reason being the British didn't want to be responsible for the killings and looting that were anticipated to happen after the partitioning. what the 2 countries looked like was known only to Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India and Radcliffe himself.so here were 2 countries celebrating their independence day with euphoria and not even knowing what their country looked like! after the "Radcliffe line" was made public all hell broke loose! for example Lahore which went to Pakistan was 36% Hindu which meant that all these people had no choice but to leave their ancestral home and male way towards India. the partitioning fueled hate among the different communities and displaced 15 million people. Radcliffe left India just 4 days after his work was done and aid on leaving "nobody in India will like me for what i have done. and i don't want them to come looking for me. this is the most lonely job i had ever had to do.............."
